Never a Cross word

Never a Cross word

It’s a challenge
Daily
The gauntlet thrown down
Cryptic craziness
Teasing and pleasing
Testing my intellect
Pushing my little grey cells
To the limit
Each day
A different setter
Each day a different challenger
But each day the same competition
Me against him or her
Or it
I heard some are computer generated now
Daily in my daily
I cast the news and blues to one side
Ignore the markets
Fold over the last six pages
With the sigh
“And teams played sports!”
I set my wits
To beat the setter
I want it to be me that is the better
I want to win
I’m never angry when I lose
Never a cross word for the crossword
But I need to do it
I need to succeed
I need to know my use of language
Is just as good
Just as twisted
My mind just as cryptic
But still I am staring
Still I am yearning
How can this be?
Why did it happen to me?
I’m stuck at the start
No where to go but down
If I can get one down
Then I might get one across
Get one across the setter
And win!
