Man’s Best Friend

Man’s Best Friend

Always by my side
My best friend doesn’t
Bring my slippers
Or the morning paper
He runs with me
He sleeps with me
Down to the beach
Playing in the surf
Roaming the hills
Hunting out a rabbit
Faithful
Loving
Adoring
Years spent together
Through thick and thin
The good and the bad
Always sharing
(sometimes stealing)
My dinner
Guarding me from danger
Seeing off the demons of the night
We two are as one
Though one day we shall be parted
By that dark hand
That claims us all
‘Til then we soldier on
Happy
Content
Satisfied
In my heart I know
That man’s best friend
Is a Labrador…
…that, and a Colt .45
