The Rage Within

The Rage Within

He sits tensely
Hands gripping the chair arms
As though he wishes to tear them to shreds
Relax!
Relax says the therapist
You must learn to channel the anger
Control the rage
Send your mind to a safe
Pleasant place
Think placid thoughts
Try counting to ten
Good, now close your eyes
You are a child
You are happy
The anger fades away
Only an even temper remains
You are kind
You are gentle
You are relaxed
The rage has gone
If you allow the anger to rule you
You will be consumed
Your life will pass from bitterness
To violence
To chaos
And worse
You have no idea, he says
He counts to ten again
He cocks the .45 pistol
And puts one between the doctor’s eyes
He sighs deeply, relaxed at last
Rolls and flexes his neck and says
Manage that!
