The Night Male

The Night Male

– after Part I of “Night Mail” by W. H. Auden

This is the night male crossing the border
Taking liberties with the lower order

Taking Dutch courage to an excess
Still saving some cash to pay for sex

Slipping silently down darkened lanes
Tapping lightly on red-lit panes

Sneaking consolation in the dark
Accosting the young girls in the park

Looking out for the better street-walkers
Avoiding the pimps and the fast talkers

Beneath the stars the lonely ranger
Taking solace in the arms of a stranger

Scurrying home to a loveless life
One more drink and to bed with the wife

This is the night male living a lie
In daylight’s anguish wondering why
