First Encounter

The explorers moor in the bay,
their hopes are high
they set to work
cutting trees, constructing cabins
building a dock
their hopes are high

They don’t hear the natives
whistling like birds
calling to and fro
descending as a swarm
slicing, cutting, decapitating
whistling like birds

One escapes and runs to the hills
his hopes are few
a temporary answer
for he will be found
his time will come, his end will come
his hopes are few

He spies from afar the horror
the debris scattered round
a half-eaten backbone
a wild-eyed child in a grass skirt
picking scraps of meat from
the debris scattered round

They embellish their hair with bones
the natives dance and chant
the wild-eyed child gnaws at an arm
heads are put on stakes
the watcher’s heart is ice as
the natives dance and chant

The ship is set ablaze
they wait for more to come
no evidence is left
they creep back into the hills
patience on their side
they wait for more to come
