April 2015 PAD – Day 6: Too Proud to Fight

On April 6th 1917 President Woodrow Wilson formally declared war on Germany.

Too Proud to Fight

There comes a time when every man
might turn and walk away
turn his back on his fellow man
turn his back on tyranny
turn his back on his home
and simply walk away

Holding the moral high-ground
holding deep-set convictions
holding flowers instead of rifles
holding sit-ins instead of marching
holding prayer meetings instead of reveille

Still, there comes a time when every man might say:
“Enough is enough!”
enough to the tyranny
enough to the bullies
enough to the slaughter of innocents
enough to the repression

Defending the moral high-ground
Defending deep-set convictions
Defending the flowers from rifles
Defending the weak from the strong
Defending the poor from the master-class

There are times when every man
might think war wrong
might think violence extreme
might chant in angry masses:
“Hell no, we won’t go!”
and yet there comes a time
when every man will stand his ground
stand tall and proud
stand side by side: brother and sister
and say with fairness and love and right
“Hell yes, let’s stop this mess!”
