April 2015 PAD – Day 13: The Birth of a Naturalist

April 13th 1939 saw the birth of one of the 20th Century’s greatest poets – perhaps one of the greatest of all time: Seamus Heaney

The Birth of a Naturalist

From gentle beauty in nature
to the cruel nature of man
Translating ancient texts
and writing at the cutting edge
Locking horns with the Old Guard
Knocking down doors for the new
Frogspawn and bogland sitting
side by side with national pride
all of this and so much more
was yet a twinkle in the eye of a babe
just months before the coming war

Ever steadfast, ever cautious
pleading the Poet’s right to stand aloof
apolitical, impartial, a moral compass
a shining beacon through the troubled times
and from cradle to grave the sharp mind
and the sharpened nib scratching and scrawling
and teaching and guiding
leading the procession
leading the way
for so many who would aspire
who would dream to emulate greatness
and fall withering in the shadow
whilst the squat pen rests twixt finger and thumb
still digging
