April 2015 – PAD – Day 28: Hell No! We Won’t Go!

On April 28th in 1789 – A mutiny on the British ship Bounty took place when a rebel crew took the ship and set sail to Pitcairn Island. The mutineers left Captain W. Bligh and 18 sailors adrift. On the same day in 1967 – Muhammad Ali refused induction into the U.S. Army and was stripped of boxing title. He cited religious grounds for his refusal.

Hell No! We Won’t Go!

It’s never made sense, it never will
One individual taking another’s life
Another steps up to take revenge
One leader leads us astray and we put another fool in their place
One fool followed by another, followed by a madman
Followed by millions of fools letting it happen

Sometimes the leaders need to be cast adrift
Sometimes we need to make our own destiny
One nation setting forth to destroy another
One tyrant subjecting their people to inhuman suffering
Sometimes we just have to do what is right
The global social conscience must prevail
We have to go and make a difference
We have to prolong the violence with violence
To stop the violence. Don’t we? Well, don’t we?

Sometimes we must stand tall and say no!
We really are too proud to fight
We really do hold the moral high ground
We may have fought before but this is not our war
We are neutral, fight and die if you must but do not call us
A wise man once begged to know, he asked us all
What if they gave a war and nobody came?
What if we all just sat down and held hands and sang?
What if we all pushed daisies into the barrels of the guns?
What if every soldier lay down his arms and sat with us?

Sometime, sometime to come we will all realise
Despite the manic calls of the tyrants and fools
We have to speak with one voice around the world
We have to sing, we have to chant, be heard above the rant
Hell no! We won’t go!
Hell No! We Won’t Go!
HELL NO! WE WON’T GO!
HELL NO! WE WON’T GO!
HELL NO! WE WON’T GO!
and finally make peace with each other
and finally make peace with ourselves
and finally make love not war
and finally…

…if anyone asks, hell no! I won’t go!
