Slightly Spicy Sweet and Sour

Ingredients:

  • 450 grams of your desired meat: chicken, pork or even prawns
  • 1 bag of stir-fry vegetables from the supermarket (feel free to cut from fresh if you prefer)
  • 5 medium mushrooms
  • sea-salt, ground black pepper, Chinese 5 spice powder

The sauce:

  • 300ml tomato sauce
  • 1 dessertspoon of bitter orange marmalade
  • a good squeeze of lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 dessert spoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Method:

  • Finely dice or shred the meat
  • Mix the sauce ingredients in a bowl and heat gently in a saucepan, stirring to mix well
  • slice the mushrooms
  • heat a wok and add 1 tablespoon of your preferred cooking oil – I like to add a few drops of sesame oil too
  • when the wok is steaming hot add the meat and seal completely
  • add vegetables and stir briskly
  • when the vegetables are softening add the mushrooms and continue to stir
  • add a pinch of salt, a little black pepper and a touch of 5 spice
  • add the heated sauce and mix well
  • lift the mixture from the wok with a slotted spoon and reserve
  • reduce the sauce till it thickens nicely
  • pour the sauce back over the meat/vegetable mix and serve

This is a fast, easy dish to prepare.  About 10 mins preparation and 5 minutes to cook. Of course if you want with more spice or with none – that is up to you.
